While both the AI form tools and the Assistant are designed to support SurveyCTO users, they serve distinct purposes:

  • The SurveyCTO AI form tools analyze your entire form file and offer targeted help with expression coding and question review. These tools are optimized for direct, tailored improvements to specific forms and accompanying workflows.
  • The SurveyCTO AI Assistant provides more general guidance and troubleshooting on both data collection best practices and the SurveyCTO platform.It can generate expressions, explain form logic, and provide research and form design assistance based on your queries, but it cannot analyze entire forms.

How to use AI form tools?

The AI form tools are built into the online form designer, which you can access through any form in the “Your forms and datasets” section under the Design tab of your server console. You can use the AI form tools whenever you're adding or editing a relevance condition, constraint, or calculation.

Build calculate expressions

  1. You can generate expressions for calculate fields using the AI form tools. Click “Configure” after selecting the calculate field type.


     
  2. Then, click “Specify with AI”.


     
  3. In plain text, describe how to calculate the value. The AI form tools can parse your form and understand its structure, so it can generate expressions based on - or referencing - other field names already used in the form..
    For example, if there’s a field that collects the interviewee’s date of birth (DOB), you can either reference the field name directly or describe it in plain language. Then click “Generate expression.”


     
  4. The AI tools will then insert the appropriate expression using the exact field name(s) from your form.

Generate expressions for constraint and relevance 

  1. In the Add a field section of the online designer, enter the field label, select the field type, and click Configure.
  2. Type the field name and click More options.
  1. You can create relevance and constraint expressions using the AI form tools. For example, to build a constraint expression using the AI form tools, select Specify with AI.


     
  2. Type the field requirement in plain text in the box and click Generate expression:


     
  3. You can review the expression generated by the AI form tools and decide whether to use it or make it generate another expression.

     

Review your questions using the AI form tools

You can ask the AI form tools to review a question and suggest improvements at any time.

  1. In the online form designer, click the mini AI wand button in the field header next to the question.

Or, open the field and click the full-size “Conduct AI Review” button in the field details.The AI form tools will review the question and display suggested updates.
