While both the AI Form Tools and the Assistant are designed to support SurveyCTO users, they serve distinct purposes:

  • The SurveyCTO AI form tools analyze your entire form file and offer targeted help with expression coding and question review. These tools are optimized for direct, tailored improvements to specific forms and accompanying workflows.
  • The SurveyCTO AI Assistant provides more general guidance and troubleshooting on both data collection best practices and the SurveyCTO platform.It can generate expressions, explain form logic, and provide research and form design assistance based on your queries, but it cannot analyze entire forms.

  • Feedback on survey questions to improve clarity and ensure alignment with the overall goals of your data collection workflow

How to use AI form tools?

Step 1: Upload your form 

  1. Go to the SurveyCTO AI form tools page and upload your form definition in Excel (.xlsx) format.
  2. Once uploaded, the tools will scan your form and display all questions available for review.

Step 2: Choose your task

Once your form is uploaded, you can:

1. Ask for expression coding assistance: Get help with coding constraints, relevance logic, or calculations for specific fields.

Simply describe your goal in plain language—there’s no need to specify all the field names or expression types. The AI expression code builder will generate an expression based on your uploaded form and the natural language description you provide. The tool will use your form’s field names as part of the expressions it gives you, and you can refer to your form’s field names in your natural language questions.

You can easily copy the generated expression by clicking the copy icon beside it. Additionally, you can provide feedback on its usefulness by clicking the thumbs-up or thumbs-down buttons, helping improve the tool over time.

2. Request question reviews: Get feedback on the wording, structure, and presentation of your survey questions.

The AI Question Review section analyzes each form field and offers actionable recommendations for improvement. 

For more tailored feedback, you can provide additional details such as the survey context, target locations, and the languages the survey will be conducted in. The more information the AI form tools have, the more targeted and specific its advice can be.

By default, after asking for a question review of your form, you will see a summary of each field, including the field name, label, hint and field type. To receive recommendations for improvement for a specific field, simply click the AI Review button for that field.

Once you ask for a question review, the AI form tool will give you a review summary that includes an overall assessment, , the current question text, and an assessed level of importance. Items marked as higher importance are highlighted in red. As shown in this example, there may be multiple recommendations depending on the question itself, and the evaluation criteria and context you provided. Review these recommendations carefully, test any suggestions, and then decide which to implement.

You can also easily copy the suggested updates, and provide thumbs up/thumbs down feedback for each recommendation.

Step 3: Test and refine outputs

It’s essential to thoroughly test any AI-generated expressions or question reviews. Make adjustments as needed to ensure they fully meet your specific requirements.
